Ss,M,E Flashcards

1
Q

What happens during a lunar eclipse

A

A lunar eclipse occurs when the moon passes directly behind the earth into its umbra. This can only occur when the sun earth and moon are aligned exactly or very closely so, with the earth in the middle. Hence the lunar eclipse can only happen the night of a full moon.

Q

Waxing and Waning

A

Waxing is when the right side it lit up and waning is when the left side is lit up

17
Q

Moons rotation

A

The moon orbits the earth every 27.322 days

18
Q

Moon revolution

A

This takes about 27.32 days

19
Q

Why do we see the same surface of the moon

A

Only one side of the moon is visible from earth because the moon rotates on its axis the same rate the moon orbits the earth

20
Q

Direct and indirect sunlight seasons

A

Earth is closet to the sun in January (Winter) Earth is farthest from the sun in July in (Summer) Direct sunlight is received in summer. Indirect sunlight is in winter

21
Q

Length of rotation

A

Earth rotates every 24 hours with respect to the sun

22
Q

Length of revolution

A

365 earth days

23
Q

Cause of seasons

A

Seasons are caused by the tilt of earths axis. The earth has a tilt of 23.5 degrees

24
Q

Solstices

A

When the sun reaches its highest or lowest point in the sky

25
Q

Equinox

A

When the sun crosses the celestial equator

26
Q

Seasons in hemisphere

A

The season in the Northern Hemisphere if the opposite of the Southern Hemisphere so in Australia it is winter in July

27
Q

Rotation

A

Spin on its axis

28
Q

Why do we not have an eclipse every time there is a new moon or full moon

A

The moons orbit it tilted 5 degrees
