Colonialism
The policy of creating colonies around the world for more money and power and having a type of control back in the homeland
Imperialism
One nation extends its control to the government and the economy of another nation.
Direct Rule
Created a colony where it was directly ruled by the mother country (homeland)
Indirect Rule
The policy of letting the colony rule itself and the mother country (homeland) makes profit off of the colony. There are two types of indirect rule.
Protectorate
A system where people have their own government in the colony. It is a form of indirect rule, where the homeland has the final say in important matters and protects the colony.
Sphere of Influence
A form of indirect rule where the region can only trade or invest with the homeland (mother country).No other nation can do business in the region.
Suez Canal
It connects the Red Sea to the Mediterranean Sea and is an important place for trade. The French and British fought over control of the canal and the British won.
Spanish -American War
Also called the War of 1898 the United States fought Spain over the freedom of Cuba. The US gained Guam, the Philippines, and Puerto Rico by winning the war.
Sovereignty
A people’s right to pick their own government.
Zulu War
A six-month war between the British and the Zulus over Zululand in Africa. The British won because of their use of guns.
Sepoy Rebellion
Indian Soldiers who worked for the British rebelled against the British and lost placing India under Direct Rule of the British.
Boxer Rebellion
A society called the Boxers fought against foreign influence and Christianity in China. The Boxers were crushed by the other countries demanding trade rights in China.
Open Door Policy
A policy in China where all nations would have equal trading rights in China.
Russo-Japanese War
A short war between Russia and Japan over trading rights with Korea. Japan crushed Russia with their modern technology and won control of Korea.
