Louisiana purchase
purchase of the west territory by Thomas Jefferson in 1803
Trail of tears
in 1831, tribes negotiated for cash for their lands. hence the name, it was a long, sorrowful journey

Acquisition of Oregon
The Territory of Oregon was a territory of the United States from 1848, until 1859, when the southwestern portion was admitted to the Union as the State of Oregon.
Mexican-American war
this was caused by Mexico refusing to sell Texas, California, and Mexico to the United states. the US had enough and declared war on Mexico in 1846 lasting to 1848
Reasons for moving westward
the land became expensive, Americans felt crowded, opportunities to start businesses, mormons finding religious freedom.

fur trappers, beaver fur was high in demand
Andrew Jackson
An american politician supporting expanding democratic rights; his first campaign was in 1824; he dominated American politics
Thomas Jefferson
in 1803, he made the Louisiana purchase from france
Lewis and Clark
in 1803, Jefferson and fellow explorers and Meriwether Lewis to explore new lands. Lewis asked William Clark to join him. from there they all spoke to Indians, climbed the Rocky Mountains, and explored the plains

in 1840’s he created the term for manifest destiny
Gadsden Purchase
the US payment for 10 million dollars of land to complete the railroad (1853)
Erie Canal
New York Governor DeWitt Clinton approved it; enabled timber and other goods to be transported by barge;Mohawk and Hudson rivers to Lake Erie
