SS Flashcards
Black Codes
Black Codes were laws that restricted the rights of African Americans. They were not allowed to be equal to whites.
Freedmen
Freedmen were people who were freed from slavery.
Sharecropper
Was a way former slaves owners got around slavery. They made illiterate blacks sign a contract where they would work for them by providing a plant farm in return for some percentage of the profit. However, they would be so in debt that they would be forced to keep working (kind of like slavery).
Jim Crow Laws
Jim Crow laws were laws that kept Blacks separated from white.
Reconstruction
Reconstruction was the time period after the Civil War. This was when they were figuring out what to do with all the freedmen in the South. During this time many obstacles came in the South as the former slave owners did not accept how they had equal rights.
Radical Republicans plan for Reconstruction
The Republicans wanted Northers to govern the South, make 50% swear an oath, former Confederate officers could not participate in politics, and provide freedmen with $100 and 40 acres of land.
Lincoln’s plan for Reconstruction
He wanted to forgive the South, return property, and make 10% swear an oath.
Compromise of 1877
This was when the South agreed to stop sabotaging the elections in return for the North to stop having troops in the South.
Plessy V Ferguson
The Plessy Vs Ferguson case set a precedent that showed how the government felt about black rights. The Supreme Court made Jim Crow laws legal.
Freedmen’s Bureau
Freedmen’s Bureau was a group that provided freedmen with necessities such as food, water, and clothes.
13th amendment
Abolished Slavery
14th amendment
Everyone born in the US can become a citizen.
15th amendment
Gave former slaves a right to vote.
Violence perpetrated against African Americans
Some violence such as the KKK and White League both targeted mostly Blacks and republicans because they did not want Blacks to hold any political power.
Difference between the Republican party (North) and the Democratic Party (South) during Reconstruction
The difference was that Democrats did not want to grant African Americans equal rights. They tried to prevent blacks from having a say in politics but sabotaging the votes. While the Republicans tried their best to make Reconstruction more easier for blacks however the Southerners prevented that from happening.
