squad offensive tatics Flashcards
Definition of offensive tatics
Operations which aim at destroying or defeating an enemy. Their purpose is to impose US will on the enemy and achieve decisive victory
Purpose of the offensive
destroy enemy forces, equipment, and resources deceive and divert the enemy deprive the enemy of resources gain info on the enemy seize key terrain produce a reaction from the enemy disrupt enemy actions or preparations
4 types of offensive operations, which may occur in sequence simultaneoulsy or independently
movement to contact
attack
exploitation
pursuit
movement to contact
offensive operation that seeks to gain or fegain contact and develp the situatuion in relation to an enemy whose general location is known but exact is unkwon
attack
offensive operation characterized by coordinated movement, supported by fire conducted to defeat, destroy, neutralize, or capture the enemy.
exploitation
offensive operation that follows a successful attack and is designed to disorganize the enemy in depth
pursuit
offensive operation designed to catch or cut off a hostile force attempting to escape, with the aim of destroying it
Types of attack
Hasty attack-an attack in which preparation time is traded for speed to exploit opportunity
Deliberate attack-offensive action characterized by pre-planned coordinated employment of firepower and maneuver to close with and destroy the enemy
Phases of the attack
preparation
conduct
consolidation/exploitation
not to be considered as distinct entities and not always definable seperation between them
6 forms of maneuver
frontal attk flanking attk envelopment turning movement infiltration penetration
Forms of maneuver define
basic techniques a force conducting offensive operations uses to gain an advantage over the enemy. The decisionon the form of maneuer to utilize in an operation is accomplished during the preparation phase of the attk
squad ldr responbilities in combat
carries out the orders issued to him by the PLT CMDR. responsible for the tatical employment, fire discipline, fire control, and maneuver of the squad. Positioned where they can best carry out the orders of the PLT CMDR and ovserve and control the squad
fire team LDR responsibilites in combat
position themselves where they can best observe and control the fire team, particularly the fire teams automatic fire.
Def. preparation phase
typically begins with the receipt of a warning order or mission and will consist of the 6 troop leading steps BAMCIS.
PREPARATION PHASE
Tatical planning- begin the planning
analyze the order from higher -ensure comprehension of highers intent -identify squad tasks/mission ~Main effort ~supporting effort
PREPARATION PHASE
Conuct METT-TC
Map reconnaiassance -Put self in enemys place Combat Operations Center coordination -recent enemy activity -Enemy strengths and weaknesses -EN tactics, techniques and proceduress (TTP) and patterns
PREPARATION PHASE
Develop EN most likely course of action
EMLCOA
EN use of all 3 phases -EN ambush sites, patrol routes, LP/OP's, - orientation of EN POS -location of MG -Routes of withdrawl -possible counter attacks EMLCOA used to develop SOM and FSP
PREPARATION PHASE
Arrange for reconnaissance
not necessarily be within your PLT or SQD. What ever is most effective to get the info
PREPARATION PHASE
Make Reconnaissance
Key to arranging for recon is that in its execution it will validate any assumptions made during the METT-TC process, and most importantly will confirm or deny the EMLCOA
PREPARATION PHASE
Compete the plan
LDR should ensure inorporation of the new info gained from recon, refining their EMLCOA, KS/KW anaysis. Consider coordination with lateral units. Crucial to the development of the plan is the identification of the ME (Mass) and the SE (Economy of FOrce). THe CMDR must designate the bid of success. Tactical tenets and principles of war should be visible here
PREPARATION PHASE
Develp the Scheme of Maneuver
Front attack-goal is to break through the EN deense and disrupt the defensive system, achieving a penetration. Least preferred. Dupporting ATKK may be used to suppress the EN
~for overrunning a wak or disorganized EN
~During a pursuit
~for fixing an EN in place
~When a CMDR possesses overwhelming combat power and the EN is at a clear disadvantage
Flanking ATTK- offensive maneuver directed at the flank of an EN. Strike EN from an unexpected direction-acheiveing adegree of surprise and avoiding the EN principal orientatiion of his main weapons system
-usually involves a supporting attack to suppress/fix the EN
-A recon of the EN POS enhaces the attacker’s ability to identify and avoid automatic weapons, key obstacles, and mines
