What is a ritornello theme?
This is the main theme of the movement, throughout the piece it keeps returning to this theme.

What is a trill?
When you play one note and the note above and below it in a quick sensation.
Eg. Bar 9
What happens in section B (bar 13)?
Violins play trills while violin 2 plays fast semi- quavers (scales).
It also contains dotted rhythm.
What does section B represent?
Birds singing
When is the ritornello repeated?
Bar 28, for 3 bars
What happens in section C (bar 30)?
There are repeated semi-quavers playing ascending and descending scales.
What does section C sound like?
It sounds like a stream flowing.
What happens during section D (bar44)?
The strings play the tremolo notes as quickly as possible. This is followed by rapid scales which sound like thunder and lightning.
Above this the violin also plays triplet semi-quavers.
What does section D sound like?
This section sounds like a storm.
What is a triplet?
When three notes are played in the space of two.
What happens after section D?
The ritornello (section A) comes back, but this time in a minor key (C# minor).
What happens in section E (bar 59)?
Staccato notes- this means to play the notes detached.
This is followed by the violin playing trills.
What does section E sound like?
It sounds like the birds coming back after the storm.
What is imitation?
When a melody is played and it is repeated or copied by another instrument.
What is played after section E?
Section A (ritornello) is played again but in a major key.
What is a cadenza (bar 70)?
A solo section for a solo violin.
What is played at the very end?
The ritornello (section A) is played again to finish the piece off.
What is a tremolo?
Play as many notes as possible within the duration of one note.
