Q

Describe the size and number of lumps in patients with erythema nodosum.

A

Range in size from about 12-100mm in diameter.
Patients can have anywhere from 2 to 50 of them.

17
Q

List some of the differential diagnosis’ for erythema nodosum.

A

-Sarcoidosis
-Strep throat
-Fungal diseases
-Inflammatory bowel disease

18
Q

Describe what erythema nodosum looks like on light skin.

A

Red, painful bumps on lower legs but can also appear on thighs, arms, torso, and face.
Bumps start out red, and then turn purple, looking like bruises as they heal.
Also flatten out while healing.

19
Q

What does erythema nodosum look like on intermediate skin?

A

Red/purple bumps on the skin

20
Q

What does erythema nodosum look like on darker skin?

A

Purple/brown lumps on the skin

21
Q

What are petechiae?

A

Non-raised patches that appear on the skin or mucous membranes.

22
Q

What are petechiae the result of?

A

Bleeding under the skin.

23
Q

Where are petechiae often seen?

A

Usually seen in clusters on the skin surface or inside mouth or eyelids.

24
Q

List the differential diagnosis’ for petechiae.

A

-infection
-drug reaction
-sepsis
-endocarditis
-scarlet fever

25
Q

What does petechiae look like on light skin?

A

Tiny purple, red or brown spots on the skin commonly appear on arms, legs, stomach, and buttocks
(the spots do not blanch under pressure)

26

27
Q

What do petechiae look like on darker skin?

A

Petechiae can’t be seen well if the skin is black or very dark brown.
Must check mucous membranes (buccal mucosa & conjunctiva of eye)
