-coat -> resistance to chemicals (esp organic solvents)
-small acid-soluble spore proteins -> protect DNA from heat, chemicals and radiation
-Ca2+-dipicolinic acid (Ca-DPA) -> stabilises DNA
-dehydrated core -> resistance to heat and radiation
