sports test Flashcards
Arteries:
are the vessels who carry the blood away from the heart. They are thick elastic and composed of smooth muscle tissue.
Capillaries
from a vast network of small and very thin vessels which allow the oxygen and nutrients to pass into the cells and carbon dioxide removed. Link between arteries and veins.
Veins
are the vessels who carry blood back to the heart. They are thin and less elastic. They have valves to keep blood from returning in the opposite direction and they use the help of muscle tissue contractions to move the blood back to the heart.

VO2max
The VO2max refers to the maximum Oxygen uptake. In other words the VO2max is Highest amount of oxygen a person can consume during maximal exercise of several minutes’ duration.
Skeletal or striated muscle
Skeletal muscles give the body its shape and are responsible for all our voluntary movements, being under our conscious control, and can be stopped or started at our will.
Smooth muscle
The action is involuntary, meaning they continue to function without conscious thought, whether the body is asleep or awake.
-cells are long and dipdated
Cardiac muscle
It is also involuntary, not under conscious control.
Flexion
: bending, decreasing the angle between two bones.
extension
straightening, increasing the angle between two bones (the opposite action to flexion).
Abduction
moving the bone away from the centreline of the body, in either the horizontal or vertical plane.
Adduction
moving the bone towards the centreline of the body (opposite of abduction).
