Athletes circle of care
All individuals involved in care of the athlete; may include coaches, parents, certified athletic trainer, family doctor, school nurse, massage therapist, sports psychologist physical therapist, nutritionist, personal trainers, and chiropractor.
Certified strength and conditioning specialist (CSCS)
A specialist who designs and implements safe and effective strength and conditioning programs.
Chiropractor
A health care specialist who provides conservative management of neuromusculoskeletal disorders and functional clinical conditions.
Family doctor
The primary physician in the case of an athlete; works in cooperation with the team doctor.
Massage therapist
Massage therapists treat clients by using touch to manipulate the muscles and other soft tissues of the body. With their touch, therapists relieve pain, help heal injuries, improve circulation, relieve stress, increase relaxation, and aid in the general wellness of clients.
National strength and conditioning association certified personal trainer (NSCA-CPT)
A specialist who designs and implements safe and effective strength and conditioning programs with individual clients.
Physical therapist
A health care specialist who is responsible for performing treatments that require special training in therapeutic exercises, hydrotherapy, and electrotheraphy; and for performing procedures dealing with individual muscles and muscular movement.
Physical therapist assistant
A health care specialist who works with physical therapists to assist in developing treatment plans for the rehabilitation of injury.
Physician assistant
A mid-level health care practitioner who works under the supervision of physicians to provide diagnostic and therapeutic care.
Sports medicine
The study and application of scientific and medical knowledge to aspects of exercise and injury prevention.
Sports nutritionist
A health care specialist who designs special diets with the goal of enhancing athletic performance.
Sports psychologist
A specialist who works with athletes to recover from serious injury through emotional support. They also assist in goal setting and motivation.
Team doctor
A physician who specializes in sports medicine and helps the athlete maximize function and minimize time away from sports; works in cooperation with the family doctor.
Coaches role
Coaches teach and direct activities in which the athletes participates. Coaches should refer athletes to the certified athletic trainer or family physician as soon as an injury occurs.
Parents role
Parents should assume an active role in the prevention and treatment of their child’s injuries. Parents should meet with coaches and certified athletic trainers at the start of the season so that the risk of injury can be made clear to all and actions to reduce those risks can be outlined.
