Sports medicine Flashcards
Spear tackler’s spine characteristics
Loss of cervical lordosis, cervical stenosis, arthritic changes
Stinger/burner symptoms
Stinging/burning/electric shock sensation, arm numbness/tingling, “dead arm”
Stinger/burner most common spinal level affected? which muscles does that serve?
C5. Deltoid, biceps, supraspinatus, infraspinatus
C-spine fracture/dislocation mechanism
Axial load is most common
C-spine fracture/dislocation: most common spinal levels?
C5/C6 is most common. C4/C5 and C6/C7 are next most common.
3 cervical spinal injuries?
Spear tackler’s spine, stinger/burner, c-spine fracture/dislocation
Thoracic spine injury?
Compression fracture
Thoracic spine compression fracture mechanism?
Axial load, fall from height
Types of lumbar spine injuries?
Pars stress fracture, ruptured disc
Pars stress fracture mechanism?
Repeated injury. Stress reaction –> stress fracture. Twisting in lacrosse, doing squats improperly, hyperextension of back (offensive linemen with collision after snap)
What is your diagnosis?
Spear tackler’s spine (loss of cervical lordiosis and cervical stenosis are visible)
Diagnosis?
Cervical spinal fracture/dislocation (C6/C7)
Diagnosis? (picture is in thoracic spine)
Thoracic spine compression fracture
Diagnosis?
Lumbar pars stress fracture
Diagnosis?
Ruptured lumbar disc
