Massage Dosage: Before Competition

A

Seasoned athletic competitor is more likely to use than novice
More opportunities to experiment
Misconception = massage will make them too relaxed and experience decreased arousal
Perception is critical to performance
Timing is related to goal of treatment
Chronic injury may need spot work / pre-event warm-up within 30 minutes of competition

Massage Dosage: Between Competitions

A

Recovery for subsequent athletic performance
Promotes lactate mobilization from the bloodstream
Hygiene need to take presedence and area cleaned
Exception is painful cramps
Recommended to consume some form of carbohydrate and fluid replenishment prior to massage intervention
Quick flush
Long strokes with moderate pressure to decrease soreness and enhance circulation are commonly peformed

A

Percussive manipulations consisting of various parts of the hand striking the tissues at a fairly rapid rate.
Hands working alternating

Clapping

A

Cupped hands strike the skin surface rapidly catching air and compressing it causing a vibration wave to penetrate into the tissues
One or two handed

When performed over the ribs/lungs the mechanical waves help loosen secretions

Beating

A

Similar to clapping but now with a closed hand
More stimulating

Hand position
Loosely flexed fingers into palm
Striking with the heel of hand and dorsal aspect of the middle and distal phalange

Hacking

A

Uses the lateral edges of the hand to strike
“Karate Chops”
Strong stimulating effect
Used to stimulate skin, subcutaneous tissue, superficial and deep muscle tissue
Performed at right angles to the long axis of the muscles being treated
Ulnar borders and dorsal 3rd, 4th, and 5th fingers
Hands almost touch each other
This is at a more rapid pace
Variation can include just ulnar border contact
Can be a pre and post sport massage techniques
