Sports Massage Flashcards
Useful for…
Using massage techniques to promote activity and optimal performance
Stimulating
Invigorating
Strong psychological impact
Positive effects of Sports Massage
Improve circulation Decrease edema/inflammation Promoted relaxation and decrease arousal Decrease stress and competitive anxiety Enhance mental recovery/invigoration Decreased/manage pain Decreased DOMS Increased ROM Decreased adhesions Increased tissue extensibility
Massage Dosage: Before Competition
Seasoned athletic competitor is more likely to use than novice
More opportunities to experiment
Misconception = massage will make them too relaxed and experience decreased arousal
Perception is critical to performance
Timing is related to goal of treatment
Chronic injury may need spot work / pre-event warm-up within 30 minutes of competition
Massage Dosage: Between Competitions
Recovery for subsequent athletic performance
Promotes lactate mobilization from the bloodstream
Hygiene need to take presedence and area cleaned
Exception is painful cramps
Recommended to consume some form of carbohydrate and fluid replenishment prior to massage intervention
Quick flush
Long strokes with moderate pressure to decrease soreness and enhance circulation are commonly peformed
Massage Dosage: After Competition
Used for recovery
Moderate effleurage = deeper petrissage = tapotement
Release techniques can be used to specific muscles is needed
The last technique has influence on overall feeling of athlete
Tapotement – invigorating
Effleurage and gentle stretching – relaxation
Tapotement
Percussive manipulations consisting of various parts of the hand striking the tissues at a fairly rapid rate.
Hands working alternating
Wrist flexible
Movements light, springy, and stimulating
Directly or by reflex actions
4 distinct types of Tapotement
Clapping
Beating
Hacking
Pounding
Clapping
Cupped hands strike the skin surface rapidly catching air and compressing it causing a vibration wave to penetrate into the tissues
One or two handed
When performed over the ribs/lungs the mechanical waves help loosen secretions
Beating
Similar to clapping but now with a closed hand
More stimulating
Hand position
Loosely flexed fingers into palm
Striking with the heel of hand and dorsal aspect of the middle and distal phalange
Hacking
Uses the lateral edges of the hand to strike
“Karate Chops”
Strong stimulating effect
Used to stimulate skin, subcutaneous tissue, superficial and deep muscle tissue
Performed at right angles to the long axis of the muscles being treated
Ulnar borders and dorsal 3rd, 4th, and 5th fingers
Hands almost touch each other
This is at a more rapid pace
Variation can include just ulnar border contact
Can be a pre and post sport massage techniques
Pounding
Ulnar borders of loosely clenched and extended fists
Deeper than hacking
Post Sport Massage Technique
Primary Effects of Tapotement
Through direct mechanical impact
Stimulation of mechanoreceptors in skin, muscle, tendons which facilitates muscle contractions
Stimulation of the circulation of blood and lymph in superficial and deep muscle tissue
Loosening of mucus in the lungs
Pain relief as a result of pain gating theory
Therapeutic Uses of Tapotement
Increase blood and lymphatic flow in the skin and subcutaneous
Stimulate circulation of superficial and deep muscles
Facilitate healing
Relieve pain and spasm, promoting relaxation
Assist with expectoration
Facilitate muscle contraction and re-education of function
Relief of neuralgic pain following amputation, trauma, or pathology
