What is motivation
The drive to achieve something
What is the Drive reduction theory?
The idea that if an athlete has perfected a skill or the skill is too difficult for them, they will lose motivation.
Motivation is higher when a performer is keen to: participate, learn, perform effectively and progress.
What are the four types of motivation?
Intrinsic, extrinsic, tangible, intangible
What is a NACH personality?
A need to achieve.
They like a challenge, like feedback, is not afraid of failure and has high persistence.
What is a Naf personality?
Need to avoid failure.
Avoid challenges, do not take risks, often give up, do not want feedback.
What is the achievement motivation theory?
Atkinson and McLelland - The drive to achieve success is related to competitiveness, persistence and striving for perfection.
Dependant on incentives and probability for success but also a performers personality (NASH/NAF).
What is social facilitation?
Social facilitation concerns how people other than the performer can influence his or her attitudes and behaviour.
What are positive and negative effects called?
Positive - facilitation - leads to high arousal/improved performance.
Negative - inhibition - decrease in performance
Who are the ‘other’ referred to in social facilitation?
Passive others (audience and co-actors). Interactive others (competitors)
