What is meant by negligence?
When someone fails to take reasonable care for another person to avoid any dangers that could cause harm
Explain sport and the law in the context of officials
- Officials have a duty of care towards participants to ensure all dangers around them are eliminated and can compete in a safe environment
- For example it is negligent to allow a match to be played on a dangerous surface that hasn’t been checked prior to a game
Explain sport and the law in the context of coaches
- Duty of care means they have a legal obligation to eliminate all potential dangers and risks so players can participate in a safe environment
- For example, a coach can be sued for negligence if they allowed an indoor session to take place on a wet floor
What are a coaches legal responsibilities?
Healthy and safety - care for the athletes such as first aid facilities and emergency contact available
Protection from abuse - protect children from physical, emotional abuse and have policies in place for this
Supplements - legal and ethical responsibility to educate athletes and give our support and advice
Duty of Care - coaches to take such measures as are reasonable in the circumstances to ensure individuals will be safe

Concerns surrounding spectator behaviour and the variety of different measures to ensure safety and overcome hooliganism -
- removal of perimeter fences and terraces, all seater instead
- control of alcohol sales
- specified kick off ties imposed by police
- increased security and police presence
