Spontaneous Generation and Cell Theory Flashcards
Spontaneous Generation
When people believed that living organisms came from non - living organisms.
Ex. Dirty Shirt + Open Container of Wheat = Mouse
Ex. Dry River Bed - Fish
Francesco Redi
An Italian Physician who observed that flies often appeared on or around rotting meat. So, he placed rotting meat in three jars. The First Jar was unsealed, the second jar was sealed, and the third jar was covered with gauze. All of the Jars got flies expect the sealed one.
Maria Sibylla Merian
German Born Swiss Naturalist and Science Illustrator. Maria documented insect metamorphosis. She had the backing of her parents and she became an amazing scientist and phenomenal illustrator
Louis Pasteur
French Chemist and Microbiologist.
Helped develop the principles of vaccination, microbial fermentation, and pasteurization. Conducted an experiment on how not boiling water most likely could case microbial growth
Cell Theory
All living things are composed of cells.
Cells are the basic units of structure and function in living things.
All cells are produced from other cells.
Hans and Zacharias Janssen
Hans and Zacharias Janssen were known for inventing the earliest model of a compound optical microscope. They produced the first compound microscope by combining two convex lenses within a tube. This contributed to the cell theory by making it easier and more practical to observe cells
Robert Hooke
Coined the term “Cell”
Had discoveries in the field of rocks
Built Microsopes
Anton Van Leeuwenhoek
Built Microscopes, Looked at drops of lake water, scrapings from teeth and gums, Discovered a variety of one celled organisms, “animalcules” – little animals
Matthias Schleiden
A German Scientist who discovered that all plants are made of cells
Theodor Schwann
A German Scientist who discovered that all animals are made of cells
Rudolf Virchow
A German Scientist who discovered that new cells come from existing cells
