Spontaneity Flashcards
What shapes do bacteria exists in?
Coccus Bacillus Coccobacillus (Coccus + Bacillus) Vibrio Spirochete Spirillum
What are endospores?
Some bacterial species are able to form endospores through sporulation.
It forms a protective layer to protect the genetic material of the cell
Endospores are formed during harsh environments
They are resilient to harsh conditions hence vegetative cell would not be killed off easily
What are the things to take note of when typing out the scientific name of a microorganism?
Should always be italicized
First letter of genus should be capitalized
First letter of species should be in lowercase
What are the things to take note of when writing out the scientific name of a microorganism?
Should always be underlined separately (full stop should not be underlined, short form)
First letter of genus should be capitalized
First letter of species should be in lowercase
Why are endospores more resistant than vegetative cells?
Endospores have a high content of a specific protein that protects the bacterium’s genetic information
Vegetative cells do not have this specific protein, bacterium’s genetic information is not protected, gets killed off easily
Can endospores undergo cell division?
No
Endospores need to undergo germination to form a vegetative cell first, in favourable conditions
Then the vegetative cell will undergo cell division
