Sponges and Cnidarians Flashcards
Sponge Phylum
Porifera
what are the characteristics of Sponges?
- Tiney opening or so called pores all over body
- Most ancient animal
- No true tissues or organs
- No body symmetry
- Sessile = only in larvae stage
What are sponges specialized cells?
Choanocytes are flagellated cells that create current through the sponge + also used in feeding
What is the structure of a sponge?
Spongin = fibrous protein made of collagen and we as humans use these sponges for cleaning daily
Spicules = skeleton of needle - like spines + can be made of calcium or silla
What phylum are Jellyfish in?
Scyphozoa
What Phylum are Box Jellyfish in?
Cubozoa
What Phylum are Hydras in?
Hydrozoa
What Phylum are Sea Fans + Anemones + Corals in?
Anthozoa
What is Cnidarians meaning?
Their Stinging abilities
What are some characteristics of Cnidaria?
- Aquatic
- Soft Bodied
- True Tissues
- Diploblastic - 2 layers (endoderm + Ectoderm + Mesoglea (Between the two layers)
- Carnivorous
- Gastrovascular cavity (one opening)
- Radial Symmetrical
What are the two body forms for cnidaria?
Polyps: Like Corals or Corn tops
Medusa: Kind of like Jellyfish
what are specialized cell structures of cnidarians?
Cnidocytes are what cells use to attach + feed + defend
contain cnidae + Nematocysts are just stinging cnidae
What are Corals and Zooxanthellae?
- Symbiotic algae that provides food for the coral through photosynthesis
- Found in reef building corals
- Makes corals their color
what are Coral Reefs and Coral Reef health?
- Stony corals have calcium skeletons
- Reef Building
- Creates a very diverse ecosystem
