Sponges Flashcards
What are the classes of phylum ponifera? What sub kingdom are they under? Tissue? Body plan? Symmetry?
- Class Calcarea (calcium carbonate spicules), Class hexactinellida (silica spicules) Class Demospongiae (spongin spicules) 2. Subkingdom Parazoa 3.No tissue 4. Diploblastic (implying sac body, 2 germ layers, etc.) 5. Assymetrical
how do sponges reproduce?
Most are hermaphroditic (function as both male and female
How do they feed?
sponges are filter feeders
What is mesohyl?
A jelly-like layer between the epidermal cells and the Choanocytes.
what do ameobocytes do?
Ameobocytes receive food from the surrounding water and from the Choanocytes, digest it and distribute it. Also may get rid of waste or store food.
What are ameobocytes? In what phyla do we find them? How did they get their name?
They are cells that carry out digestive functions for the sponge. Phylum Ponifera Name comes from their use of pseudopodia (false feet) like amoeba.
Describe flow of water during filter feeding in a typical sponge.
Water flows in through pores into the central cavity known as the SPONGOCOEL at which point ameobocytes and Choanocytes collect food particles in the water. water flows out through the main opening called the OSCULUM
type of digestion?
intracellular
oscullum?
Main opening
What are Choanocytes? What is their other name?
- They are flagellated cells that line the interior of the spongocoel. the beating of their flagella helps bring water in through the pores. 2. Also known as Collar cells because their fingerlike projections that form a “collar” around the flagella.
what do Choanocytes do?
engulf bacteria and food particle by phagocytosis and either digests them or gives them to the ameobocytes for distribution
