Split brain research into hemisphere lateralisation Flashcards
What joins the two halves of the brain
Corpus callosum
What is a commmissurotomy
devision of two hemispheres through surgery
Where do visual pathways cross over
Optic chiasm
Difference between someone with split brain
No connection with the corpus callosum so no communication between the two fields.
What is the left hemisphere lateralised for
language, music, analytical tasks, controls the right side of the body, viewing the right visual field.
What is the right hemisphere lateralised for
Perception, emotional aspects of language, drawing, information synthesis. facial recognition, spatial tasks, controls left side of body.
The split brain procedure
Subject gazes at a fixation point in the centre of the screen. Images and words flashed to either side. asked to say, write or feel what they saw. Presented at a 1/10th/s
Visual recognition in the right visual field
(left hemisphere) speech and writing
Visual recognition in the left visual field
(right hemisphere) PPs say they have seen nothing but could use their lefthand to feel for a matching object on the table.
Facial recognition
In the right hemisphere, if shown a composite face they would be able to describe from the left hemisphere and select with the right.
Language
Left hemisphere function. Right does have some language function. Wall clock shown to the right hemisphere and the pps found a wrist watch.
limitations
All epileptic, male, 11
not representative
What did kimura find
more aphasia in men than women with hemisphere damage
Strengths to procedure
fixation point and short time prevented eye tracking
