Split Brain Research Flashcards
Hemispheric lateralisation
Some mental processes in the brain are mainly specialised either in the left or right hemisphere. Language is specialised to the left and visual-motor task on the right
Contralateral
The opposite side of the body to the brain hemisphere that controls it
Corpus callosum
Broad band of fibres that joins the two hemispheres of the brain and allows communication to occur and to operate independently
Split Brian research
A series of studies which began in the 1960’s involving epileptic patients who had experienced a surgical separation of hemispheres of the brain. This allowed researchers to investigate the extent to which brain function is lateralised.
Lateralisation
The tendency for some neural functions or cognitive processes to be specialised to be on the left or right hemisphere
