Split Brain Flashcards
What is split brain?
-surgery to treat epilepsy
-cut area that connects 2 H Of brain
-surgery= relieve epilepsy
-major side effects:
2 hem become functionally separate
Outline split brain research AO1
Aim= effects of severing the connection between 2 hem of Brian on functioning
Method= natural exp
Ppt= 11 had corpus collosum severed due to surgery
Procedure
1-ppt sit Infront of screen, fixating gaze on spot in middle of screen
2-presented w visual info to either rvf or left eye vf for 1/10th of a sec
-so there ain’t enough time for other vf to switch focus to the v image
Results
-Objects seen in RVF= processed by left hem resp for lang
-Can name presented object verbally nd in writing
-objects seen in LVF= processed by right hem resp for recognition
- cannot name presented object but can recognise by pointing
Conclusion
2 hem of brain have diff abilities bd functions
-only left can produce lang
-right can recall identity info but cannot verbalise
AO3 strength
P- scientific method, uses scientific enquiry
E-coz based on objective nd empirical tech= controlled lab settings
E-used to identify which h resp for which task, e.g sb pt only able to say what they saw when image presented to RVF, sugg left h activated during lang task
L-inc internal val
AO3 limitation
P-casual rele hard to establish
E-beh of sperrys split brain ppt, compared to neurotypical control g where no one had epilepsy
E- maj confounding var, any diff between 2 g could have been due to epilepsy than split b
-epilepsy may caused unique changes in b may influenced how brain is lateralised
L- diff to establish weather ppt cog ability and lateralisation are due to split brain
Lowering internal val
