spleen Flashcards
Lymph nodes
effectively filter foreign antigens from lymph and mount an immune response to protect the organism
The spleen filter foreign antigens from blood and mount an immune response to protect the organism
In addition the spleen removes particulate matter, senescent erythrocytes and platelets from the circulation
Spleen connective tissue
capsule and trabeculae which project into the organ
Spleen consists of cords of cells separated by sinusoids
The blood filled sinusoids stain red- red pulp
The cords are densely packed lymphocytes in between the sinusoids stain blue- White pulp
As blood percolates thru sinusoids and other spaces within the spleen the RBCs need to squeeze thru narrow spaces. less flexible plasma membranes and may lyse during this passage, the RBC fragments are then phagocytosed by Macrophages positioned along passageways
