Spirometry Flashcards
What is FEV1
Forced expiratory volume in 1 second
What is FVC?
Forced vital capacity - amount you can exhale after inhaling
What is PEFR?
Peak expiratory flow rate
What is a normal FEV1;FVC ratio?
80% (0.8)
What happens in obstructive lung disease, eg COPD and asthma
The FEV1 reduces but the FVC remains the same so FEV1:FVC ratio is smaller
What level FEV1:FVC is diagnostic for COPD?
<70%
What does a spirometry read out look like?
What is Inspirational reserve volume?
The of space left in the lungs during normal breathing
What is Inspirational Capacity?
The amount that can be inhaled
What is tidal volume
Normal breathing (500ml)
What is functional residual capacity?
Voume of air in the lungs after passive expiration
What is residual volume?
Amount left in the lungs that cant be expired
What is expiratory reserve volume?
the amount left that can be expired during normal breathing
What is vital capacity?
The total amount that can be exhaled
What is the FEV1, FVC and ratio for obstructed and restricted
FEv1
Obstructed = Low
Restricted - Normal or low
FVC
Obstructed - Normal or low
Restricted - Low
Ratio
Obstructed - Low
Restricted - High or normal
