Spirometry Flashcards
1
Q
Function of spirometer
A
Used to help diagnose and monitor certain lung conditions by measuring how much air you can breathe out in one forced breath
2
Q
What do results show?
A
- If lungs aren’t working properly
- If lungs are obstructive ( ability to breathe out quickly is affected by narrowing of airways, but the amount of air you can hold in your lungs is normal) or restrictive ( amount of air you can breathe in is reduced because your lungs are unable to fully expand)
3
Q
Precautions
A
- Functioning soda lime
- No air leaks- invalid results
- sterile mouthpiece
- Water chamber must not be overfilled ( water may enter into the air tubes)
4
Q
Why does the volume in the chamber slowly decrease?
A
The oxygen is used in respiration and, carbon dioxide is released in respiration, but the carbon dioxide is then absorbed by the sodalime causing a drop in volume
5
Q
Function of soda lime
A
Absorb CO2 being released during respiration
6
Q
Function of counterpoise
A
Allows chamber to move up and down
