A - Trunk flexion
External Obliques
O - Outer border of lower 8 ribs
I - Iliac crest & inguinal ligament
A - Rotates and side flexion the trunk, acts with internal/external oblique on opposite side to rotate the trunk
Internal Obliques
O - Lateral 2/3rds of inguinal ligament, iliac crest
I - 10th-12th ribs and linea alba
A - Rotates and side flexion the trunk, acts with internal/external oblique on opposite side to rotate the trunk
Transverse Abdominis
O - Lateral 1/3rd inguinal ligament, iliac crest, cartilage of lower 6 ribs diaphragm
I - Ends in aponeurotic sheet fusing with the internal obliques to reach the linea alba (forms rectus sheath)
A - Trunk flexion, lateral flexion
Quadratus Lumborum
O - Aponeurotic fibres, iliac crest
I - lower border of last rib, transverse process of L1-4
A - Lateral flexion of trunk, extension of trunk
Multifidus
O - Sacrum, transverse process of lumbar and thoracic vertebrae, articular process of lower 5 cervical vertebrae
I - Inserts into the spinous process of the vertebrae above the transverse process origin (runs full length of spine)
A - stabilises individual joints
Erector Spinae
O - Spinous process of lumbar spinous and T11-12
I - Posterior ribs, thoracic, cervical and mastoid process
A - Trunk extension, lateral flexion
Interspinalis
O - Short muscles between the spinous process, either side of interspinal ligament
I - as above
