Quadratus Lumborum
A- trunk lateral flexion to same side. Pelvic elevation on same side

I- 12th rib; transverse processes of all 5 lumbar vertebrae

Spinalis (cervical)
A- neck extension
O- spines of 1st and 2nd thoracic and 7th cervical vertebrae; lower ligamentum nuchae
I- spines of 2nd, and sometimes 3rd and 4th, vertebrae
N- thoracic and cervical spinal nerves
Longissimus (cervical)
A- BIlaterally: neck extension Unilaterally: neck lateral flexion to same side
O- transverse processes of upper 4 or 5 thoracic vertebrae
I- transverse processes of 2nd to 6th cervical vertebrae
N- cervical and thoracic spinal nerves
Illiocostalis (cervical)
A- BIlaterally: neck extension; Unilaterally: neck lateral flexion to same side
O- angles of 3rd through 6th ribs
I- transverse processes of 4th - 6th crevical vertebrae
N- cervical and thoracic spinal nerves
Multifidus
A- Bilaterally: trunk extension Unilaterally: trunk lateral flexion to same side; rotation to opposite side
O- sacrum, posterior sacroiliac ligament; transverse processes of lumbar and thoracic vertebrae; articular processes of lower four cervical vertebrae
I- spinous processes of vertebrae above
N- spinal nerves
Rotatores
A- rotation of vertebral comlumn to opposite side O- transverse processes of thoracic vertebra below I- lamina of vertebra above
N- thoracic spinal nerve
Intertransversarii
A- neck and trunk lateral flexion to same side
O- transverse processes of vertebra below
I- transverse proccesses of vetebrae above
N- spinal nerves
Rectus Abdominis
A- trunk flexion, compression of abdomen When pelvis stabilized: depresses ribs. Accessory muscle of ventilation
O- pubic crest
I- xiphoid process and costal cartiliages of 5th - 7th ribs
N- 7th - 12th thoracic nerves
External Oblique
A- Bilaterally: trunk flexion; compression of abdomen Unilaterally: trunk flexion; with rotation to opposite side. When pelvis stabilized: depresses ribs; accessory muscle of ventilation
O-lateral surface of lower 8 ribs
I- iliac crest, pubic tubercle, and linea alba via abdonmial aponeurosis
N- 8th - 12th intercostal, iliohypogastric, and ilioinguinal nerves
Internal Oblique
A- Bilaterally: trunk flexion; compression of abdomen Unilaterally: trunk flexion with rotation to same side. When pelvis stabilized: depresses ribs; accessory muscle of ventilation
O- inguinal ligament, iliac crest, thoracolumbar fascia
I- 8th - 12th ribs, linea alba, via abdominal aponeurosis
N- 8th - 12th intercostal, iliohypogastric, and ilionguinal nerves
Transverse Abdominis
A- compression of abdomen; accessory muscle of ventilation
O- inguinal ligament, iliac crest, thorocolumbar fascia; costal cartliages of lower seven ribs
I- pubic crest, linea alba via abdonimal aponeurosis
N- 7th - 12th ribs intercostal, iliohypogastric, and ilioinguinal nerves
Sternocleidomastoid
A- Bilaterally: head and neck flexion. Unilaterally: lateral neck flexion to same side; rotation of head to opposite side Accessory muscle of ventilation
O- sternum and clavicle
I- mastoid process
N- accessory nerve (cranial nerve XI); 2nd and 3rd cervical nerves
Semispinalis Capitis
A- Bilaterally: head and neck extension. Unilaterally: lateral flexion of head and neck to same side; neck rotation to opposite side
O- transverse processes of upper 6 thoracic and 7th cervical vertebrae; articular processess of 4th - 6th cervical vertebrae
I- occipital bone
N- cervical spinal nerves
Splenius Capitis
A- Bilaterally: head and neck extension. Unilaterally: lateral flexion and rotation of head to same side
O- lower half of nuchal ligament; spinous processes of C7 - T3
I- lateral occipital bone; mastoid process
N- middle and lower cervical spinal nerves
