Q

In order to achieve FULL UE elevation, what must the trunk do?

A

Must have adequate U-thoracic extension and ROTATION of first 6 ribs
- at 150 degrees of unilateral elevation, the upper thoracic region begins to extend and ipsilaterally sidebend

Q

Moreso than other motions, what can predispose someone to cervical AND lumbar deterioration?

  • specifically, stiff TLJ can cause..
  • and a stiff UPPER thorax can cause..
A

Rotational HYPOmobility of thorax

  • IF pt has stuff TLJ –> torsion generated during gait STAYS IN L SPINE –> breakdown of L4/L5
    • stiff upper thorax –> increases stress to C spine facets by 200-300 fold to achieve full head rotation
