Spine anatomy final review Flashcards
What are the divisions of the spine?
Cervical, thoracic, lumbar, sacral, coccyx
How many vertebrae are in the cervical spine?
7
How many vertebrae in the thoracic spine?
12
how many vertebrae in the lumbar spine?
5
How many vertebrae does a child have?
33
How many vertebrae does a adult have?
26
How many sacral segments does a newborn have?
5
An abnormal condition characterized by increase convexity of the thoracic spine curvature
kyphosis
An exaggerated lateral curvature of the spine
scoliosis
Extends posteriorly directly from the vertebral body on both sides
pedicles
Extends posteriorly from the origin of the transverse process on each side of vertebrae
lamina
The opening formed between the superior and inferior vertebral notch
Intervertebral foramen
The hole in each transverse process of cervical vertebrae C3-C6
transverse foramen
Formed by the superior and inferior articular processes
Z-joint
Facets of the first 10 thoracic vertebrae that articulate with the tubercles of ribs 1-10 make these joints
costotransverse joints
thoracic vertebrae that do not have facets for costotransverse joints
T11-T12
Joints that have facets or two demifacets that accepts the head of the rib
costovertebral joints
Thoracic vertebrae that resemble cervical vertebrae
T1-T4
Typical thoracic vertebrae
T5-T8
Thoracic vertebrae that resemble lumbar vertebrae
T9-T12
thoracic vertebrae that have a single costal facet on each side for costovertebral joints
T10-T12
Landmarks of cervical spine
C1 = Mastoid tip or EAM
C3 = Angle of mandible (gonion)
C5 = thyroid cartilage
C7/T1 = vertebra prominens
Landmarks of thoracic spine
T1 - vertebra prominens
T2/T3 = jugular notch
T4/T5 = sternal angle
T7 = mid thorax/mid lung field (7-8 inches from vertebra prominens)
T9/T10 - xiphoid process (tip)
Landmarks for lumbar spine
L2-L3 = lower costal margin
L4-L5 = Iliac crest
S1-S2 = ASIS
