spinal pathways Flashcards
is the largest fissure / sulcus at the ventral / dorsal side of the spinal cord?
ventral (front)
what is transferred in the dcml tract?
fine touch / proprioception
what is transferred in the lateral CS tract?
limb motor (LATERAL - LIMB)
what is transferred in the ventral CS tract?
axial motor (obs axial if lateral is limb)
lateral spinothalamic
pain + temp
ant spinothalamic
crude touch sensation
what is a synonym for the ‘dorsal columns’
posterior columns
where do the dcml tracts decussate?
medulla oblongata (brainstem)
becuase the dorsal columns are where they trsvel in the spinal cord, then they decussate across to the medial lemnisci
and then travel up to the thalamus
where do the spinothalamic tracts decussate?
1 or 2 levels above where they enter
spinothaLamic - travel up for a few levels in Lissauer’s fasciculus
then ascend from the spinal cord to this thalamus (it’s in the name…
where do spinothalamic and DCML tracts project in the cortex?
post central gyrus - (primary sensory area..)
corticospinal tract
descending pathway - arises from the pre-central gyrus where movement control occurs (1y motor cotrex)
where does the corticospinal pathway decussate?
where is the boundary between upper and lower motor neurone lesions?
75-90% decussate in the medulla (the LIMB fibres) - decussation in the pyramids in the medulla
hence also called the pyramidal tract..
LIMB fibres descend in the lateral corticospinal tract
AXIAL is in anterior corticospinal tract - decussate at the level of exit from the spinal cord
anterior horn of the spinal cord is where the boundary between upper and lower motor neurone lesions lies
what spinal cord injury can cause a UMN lesion?
injury to the white matter of the spinal cord..
