Spinal cord tracts Flashcards
What does the anterior Spinothalamic tract do
Pain and temperature sensation
What does the lateral corticospinal tract do
Muscle weakness, hyperreflexia and spasticity
What does the dorsal column do
Impaired proprioception and vibration sense
What does subacute combined degeneration of the spinal cord present as
Bilateral increased tone and brisk knee reflexes, as well as impaired proprioception and vibration sensation
Damage to lateral corticospinal tract and dorsal column
Causes of subacute combined degeneration of the spinal cord
B12 deficiency
What does the lateral spinothalamic tract do
Crude touch and pressure
What does the spinocerebellar tract do
sensory ataxia - gait abnormalities
Get positive Romberg’s sign
What is Brown-Sequard syndrome
Lesion of the spinal cord that causes weakness or paralysis on one side of the body and then loss of sensation on the opposite side, all below the lesion
Damage to lateral side of the cord
What does the dorsal column-medial lemniscal pathway (DCML) carry
Carries the sensory modalities of fine touch and conscious proprioception (particularly from the upper limb)
Where is the white matter in the spinal cord
Surrounds the grey matter so on the outside of the spinal cord
Make up the Lateral, posterior and anterior columns
Where is the grey matter in the spinal cord
Make up the inner part of the cord in a H shape
Have posterior and anterior horns in all vertebrae
Get lateral horns from T1-L2
What does the pre-central gyrus control
Motor control
You Pre before you go out
What does the post-central gyrus control
Sensory control
You feel the hangover after
Where does the dorsal column-medial lemniscal pathway (DCML) cross to the other side of the CNS
In the medulla
Goes up first then crosses
What makes up the anterolateral tracts
Anterior and lateral spinothalamic tracts
