15
Q

Describe the dura mater

A

Outermost layer

Attached to inner surface of cranium

In the vertebral canal it is called the dural sac and is not attached to bone

Narrows extensively at lower border of S2 where it fuses with filum terminale

Covers roots of spinal nerves as they pass through the intervertebral foramina

16
Q

Describe arachnoid mater?

A

Delicate avascular layer which lies deep to dura

Connects to pia via arachnoid trabeculae

Continuous with space around brain

Ends at S2

Contains CSF

Encloses the caudal equina as lumbar cistern

17
Q

Describe pia mater?

A

Innermost layer

Very thin

Becomes filum terminale at inferior end of cord, attached to the coccyx

In the vertebral canal, triangular extensions of pia- denticulate ligaments- are attached to arachnoid mater

18
Q

What is contained within the extra dural space?

A

Internal vertebral venous plexus

19
Q

What two ways is the spinal cord supplied with blood?

A

3 longitudinal arteries- branch of subclavian and lies on cord

Numerous segmental arteries- branches of aorta enter via vertebral canal and invertebral foramen

20
Q

What are the 3 longitudinal arteries?

A

2 posterior spinal arteries- arise from vertebral and posterior inferior cerebellar arteries

1 anterior spinal artery- arises from vertebral arteries

21
Q

Where do the segmental arterial supply arise from?

A

Cervical- vertebral arteries

Thoracic- intercostal arteries

Lumbar- lumbar arteries

22
Q

What do segmental arteries split into?

A

Radicular arteries

23
Q

What are the arteries called if there is an anastomosis between the radicular and longitudinal arteries?

A

Segmental medullary artery

24
Q

What artery runs into the vertebra?

A

Sulcus artery

25
Where is the great segmental medullary artery?
L1 on the left hand side
26
What is the clinical significance of the great segmental medullary artery?
If you damage it will cause ischaemia
27
What are the three venous drainage systems?
Longitudinal channels Internal vertebral venous plexus External vertebral venous plexus
28
What does the EVP drain?
Drains medullary cavity of the vertebral bodies and connects to segmental veins
29
Why would we want to do a lumbar puncture?
Anaesthetics Collect CSF Chemotherapy
30
What are the different layers of the spinal cord
Skin Superficial fascia Supraspinous ligament Interspinous ligament Ligamentum flavum Epidural space Dura mater Arachnoid mater Subarachnoid space
