Spinal cord Flashcards
Grey Matter
Shaped like a butterfly and contains neuron cell bodies
White Matter
surrounds grey matter and contains axons running up and down the cord
Ventral Horn
Contains motor neurons
Carries information from spinal cord to the muscle
Dorsal Horn
Sensory Neurons
Carry sensory information from body to SC
Dorsal root ganglion contains sensory cell bodies
Dorsal primary Rami
- Provide innervations to the skin of the dorsum of the body
- sensory info from the back to the SC. Also carry motor neurons to the deep back muscles
Dorsal primary Rami (medial branch)
innervates skin from C7-T1
Dorsal primary Rami (lateral branch)
innervates the skin T7-sacrum
Ventral Primary Rami (VPR)
-provide innervation to the skin of the lateral and anterior part of the body
-receives 90% of cutaneous info
(Cervical, lumbar, and sacral VPR join within their groups to form a plexus)
Cervical Plexus
- (VPR C1-C4) almost all of the muscles of the neck (no extensors)
- Skin, and posterior portion of the head
Brachial Plexus
-(VPR C5-T1) Supplies to UE
T2-T12
all separate nerves because the ribs keep them separate
Lumbar Plexus
(L1-L4) innervation to lower extremity
Sacral Plexus
(L5-S4) Supplies sciatic nerves and major nerves of the LE
