How would you recognize spina bifida occulta in a child?
Overlying skin marked with dimple, pigmentation, or patch of hair
Where does spina bifida occulta commonly occur?
Lumbosacral region
Spina Bifida Cystica
failure of neural tube and vertebral arches to close with cystic protrusion of meninges with or without spinal cord.
Meningocele
spinal cord remains in vertebral canal but may be abnormal
Lipomeningocele
superficial fatty mass in low lumbar or sacral area
Lipomeningocele is associated with a higher incidence of?
bladder and bowel dysfunction due to tethered cored
Myelomeningocele
extensive spinal cord abnormalities
Where does myelomeningocele most commonly occur?
thoracic and lumbar regions

Clinical Manifestations of Spina Bifida
- Loss of sensory/motor
- Brain, Spinal cord, and Orthopedic abnormalities
- Decreased fetal movement
- Hydrocephalus
- B+B dysfunction
-Integumentary or Cog impairment/learning issues - Disturbed growth and development
- Psychosocial issues
Type 1 motor function deficit is defined as
complete loss of function below level of lesion resulting in flaccid paralysis, loss of sensation, and absent reflexes
