What should you do as you walk into the cubicle to see the patient?
Wash hands - gel or wash
What are the 3 I’s
Introduce - full name and post
Identify - state their name & date of birth & first line of address. Then check this + hospital number against patient’s wrist-band and any request forms.
Informed consent - explain the procedure you are about to do and any complications and ask them if they are happy for you to continue.
What do you ask about after the 3 i’s?
Allergies / any adverse drug reactions in the past

- Check medication is correctly prescribed on drug chart
- Check medication hasn’t already been administered
- If patient already has a cannula in:
Check area/insertion site for inflammation/infection and if seen, remove cannula and insert new one at different site.

- Check the order for taking an arterial blood sample is written in patient’s notes
- Review patient’s notes (for diagnosis, current treatment, current respiratory support, results of previous ABGs)
- Warn patient that this is a painful and invasive procedure (in some cases, local anaesthetic may be required)
- Inform lab staff to expect sample (if necessary)(if gas analyser is not on ward, get ice ready)

- Check name, dose, route, and expiry date of drug against patient’s drug chart
