Spermatogenesis Flashcards
1
Q
What happens during mitosis (Spermatogenesis)?
A
- Somatic cell division of SPERMATOGONIA
- 2 diploid daughter cells produced, one remains in place the other moves into the lumen if the SEMINEFEROUS TUBULES
- This displaced cell differentiates into a PRIMARY SPERMATOCYTE.
2
Q
Describe MEIOSIS of SPERMATOGENESIS?
A
2 cycles of cell division produce 4 immature gametes that are not identical in size.
Within the semineferous tubules, PRIMARY SPERMATOCYTES meiotic divisions produce spermatids
3
Q
What 3 integrated processes does Spermatogenesis involve?
A
1) Mitosis
2) Meiosis
3) Spermiogenesis
4
Q
What are SPERMATIDS?
A
SPERMATIDS are undifferentiated male gametes
5
Q
What happens during SYNAPSIS of MEIOSIS I?
A
- Paternal and maternal chromosomes come come together
- involves 23 pairs of chromosomes; each member consists of 2 chromatids
