Speed & Velocity Flashcards
What is displacement?
• Distance in a given direction
What is speed defined as?
Change of distance per unit time
What is velocity defined as?
- Change of displacement per unit time.
* Speed in a given direction.
What is the formula for velocity?
Velocity = Distance / Time
What is the formula for distance?
Distance travelled = Velocity x Time
What is the formula for the speed of an object moving at a constant speed around a circle?
Speed = ( 2 x pi x r ) / T
T = time to move around once
2 x pi x r = circumference of the circle
r = radius
What is the formula for average speed?
average speed = distance / time
What is the formula for distance travelled in a short time interval?
ΔS = V x Δt
What is the formula for velocity in a short time interval?
V = ΔS / Δt
What is the formula for speed of an object in a distance ( y ) v time ( x ) graph?
Distance travelled / time taken= gradient of the line
What is acceleration defined as?
- Acceleration is defined as the change of velocity per unit time
- Acceleration is a vector quantity
- Deceleration values are negative and signify that the velocity decreases with respect to time.
What is uniform acceleration?
- Acceleration where the velocity of an object moving along a straight line changes at a constant rate.
- Acceleration is constant
What is the formula for uniform acceleration?
Object that accelerates from velocity u to velocity v, in time t along a straight line:
a = change in velocity /time taken = V - U / t
a = v - u / t
What is the formula for velocity ( re arranged from acceleration formula )?
V = u + at
What is non uniform acceleration?
• Where the direction of motion of an object changes, or its speed changes at a varying rate, acceleration is not constant.
