Speed, Distance and Time Flashcards
What is the calculation for speed?
Speed = Distance/Time
What is the calculation for Distance?
Distance = Speed x Time
Shona cycles at an average speed of 8km/h. How far has she travelled if she cycles for 4 hours?
Distance = Speed x Time
Distance = 8 x 4
Distance = 32km
Shona has travelled 32km.
Alan travels 100km in 5hrs. Find his average speed in km/h.
Speed = Distance/Time
Speed = 100/5
Speed = 20km/h.
Alan’s average speed is 20km/h
Joanna drives for 400km at an average speed of 80km/h. How long was her journey?
Time = Distance/Speed
Time = 400/80
Time = 5hrs
Joanna’s journey was 5hrs long.
An earthworm moves at a distance of 45cm in 90 seconds. Find the speed of the earthworm.
Speed = Distance/Time Speed= 45/90 Speed= 0.5 cm/s
How do you calculate Time?
Time = Distance/Speed
If you walk for 1 and 1/2 hours at an average speed of 4 miles/h. How far will you have walked?
Distance = Speed × Time
Distance = 4 × 1.5 = 6 miles
If the distance is in km and the time is in h what is the units of speed?
Speed is in km/h
What two factors make up stopping distance?
Thinking Distance and Braking Distance
What is the Thinking Distance?
The thinking distance is the distance travelled in between the driver realising he needs to brake and actually braking
What is the Braking Distance?
The braking distance is the distance that a vehicle travels while slowing to a complete stop.
What factors affect Thinking Distance?
Tiredness, Distractions, Drugs and Alcohol, Speed
What factors affect Braking Distance?
Condition of road, condition of tyres, condition of brakes, speed
A car has a stopping distance of 18 metres. The braking distance was 12 metres. How far did the car travel during the thinking distance?
6 metres
