Speed and Velocity Flashcards
Speed
Speed is a measure of how far something travels in a particular time.
Speed formula
Speed (m/s) = distance travelled (m)/ time taken (s)
Calculate speed Run 100 m in 20 seconds
Speed = 100/20 = 5 m/s
Average speed formula
Average speed = overall distance/overall time
distance formula
distance = speed x time
Time formula
time = distance/speed
State what is acceleration
Acceleration means the speed is increasing
State what is deceleration
Deceleration means speed is decreasing
State what is constant speed
Constant speed means travel at same speed
State what stationary
Stationary means the object is not moving
Acceleration formula
Acceleration = End speed - start speed/time
What does a distance time graph show?
The distance time graph shows the distance an object travels for a specific time
What is the independent variable in the distance time graph?
Time is the independent variable.
Explain how to calculate speed
Explain speed graph

Speed = distance /time
Speed
Constant speed
Stationary - not moving
Explain graph
Explain how to calculate velocity

Acceleration = change in speed/time
Acceleration = End speed - start speed/time
Acceleration = (v-u)/t

Constant velocity
Explain speed triangle

Speed = distance/time
distance = speed / time
time = distance /speed
Calculate acceleration
start speed 5 mph
end speed 65 mph
time 20 seconds
acceleration = end speed - start speed / time
= 65-5 /20
=60/20
= 3 m/s2
