Speed Flashcards
What is speed
Speed is a measure of how fast something is going
What is the formula to find speed
Speed=Distance/Time
What is the unit used to measure speed
M/s
What is Velocity
Velocity is the speed of an object in a given direction
What is a decrease of velocity called
Deceleration
What are the units of acceleration
M/s (squared)
Types of contact forces
Thrust Drag Friction
Types of Non-contact forces
Magnetism Gravity
What is friction
Friction is a force that opposes the sliding motion of an object when in contact with another object.
Advantages of friction
• Friction allows tyres to grip on a road.
• Friction allows brakes on a bike or car to work.
• Friction allows to walk on the ground without falling.
• Friction allows things to stay still on tables and chairs.
Disadvantages of friction
• Friction causes blisters on our feet.
• Friction can cause parts of equipment to wear away such as the soles on your shoe.
• Friction can cause problems for planes or cars travelling very fast. They need to use more fuel to overcome friction with the air.
How to reduce friction
Lubrication
What is mass
Mass is how much matter or “stuff” is in something.
What is used to measure mass
Mass balance
What is weight
Weight is the force due to gravity that a mass pushes down on the Earth.
