Anaphora
the repetition of words or phrases at the beginning of a sentence. [“I have a dream…”]
Diacope
the repetition of a phrase after an intervening word or phrase.[“free at least, free at last, thank God Almighty, free at last!”]
Antithesis
contrasting two opposing ideas in consecutive sentences. [“many are called, but few are chosen.”]
Chiasmus
the inversion of parts of sentences in sequence. [“fair is foul and foul is fair”]
Anadiplosis
the repetition of the last word of a sentence as the first word of the next sentence.
Amplification
the repition of the word or a phrase with the addition of more detail, in order to emphasise something.
Metaphor
the comparison of two things by speaking of one in terms of the other.
Alliteration
the repetition of the same sound or letter at the beginning of several words in a sequence.
Tricolon
a list of three or a sentence with 3 parts or clauses.
Parallelism
the use of parallel sentence structures or phrases in consecutive order.
Hypophora
the speaker first asks a question and answers it.
Polysyndeton
a way of listing things to include “and” instead of commas, in order to stress importance of something.
Allusion
a reference made to another speech or another work.
Epistrophe
words or phrases continuously repeated in the last of the sentence.
