What are locutionary acts? Give an example
Literal meaning, ex. “You’re really pretty”
What are illocutionary acts? Give an example
Purpose, ex. the speaker is complimenting the person
What are perlocutionary acts? Give an example
Reaction, ex. “Aw thank you!”
To commit the speaker to something being the case. Asserting, stating, claiming, hypothesizing, predicting, describing, or reporting. ex. Dr Jose Rizal was executed in Bagumbayan (stating a fact) or You look great in that dress (stating an opinion)
Assertives
Attempts by the speaker to get the hearer to do something. Commanding, requesting, inviting, interrogating, asking, suggesting, demanding. ex. Can you help me with my homework? (requesting) or It would be better if we meet after our class (suggesting)
Directives
Commit the speaker to some future course of action. Promising, pledging, vowing to do, threatening, pleading, inviting ex. I would like to invite you to a party (inviting).
Commissive
Express a psychological state or feeling. Congratulating, apologizing, expressing condolences or sympathy, praising, and thanking ex. Congratulations on getting in UP!
Expressive
Change the reality of a situation in accordance with the proposition of the declaration. Baptizing, marrying, sentencing, announcing, nominating, hiring/firing, terminating a contract. ex. I now pronounce you husband and wife (marrying).
