Why is pace important?
Pace variations communicate meaning and mood. There should be constant fluctuations in pace to create a well-modulated delivery.
Why is inflection important?
Inflection is the rise and fall of ones pitch during a speech. As it rises and falls it forms patterns or tunes, these tunes communicate our mood and must be unrehearsed otherwise it sounds stilted.
Why is Volume important?
Refers to how loud or quiet you talk. There should be constant fluctuations with only gentle crescendos and diminuendos. If too much breath force is used then shouting will occur.
Why is tone important?
The quality of tone alters according to your feelings and helps the listener to help recognise the mood of the speaker.
Why are rhetorical questions important?
Rhetorical questions are when you ask a question that isn’t meant to be answered. This engages the listener and forces them to think about what you are talking about. Can also be used to convey humour and sarcasm.
How do you prepare for a speech?
You must research on your topic and gather more info than you need so that you feel confident on the topic and get a picture of the situation as a whole. Then you consider your audience, your purpose and your situation and from then decide what style it’s going to be in.
How to effectively engage your audience?
Have a impactful opening: (startling statement, story, question)
Have a moving middle: logos, present every part of the argument, show cause and effect, compare and contrast, give a problem and then a solution.
Finish strong with a strong image that sticks with them on a positive note (humour, startling remark, emotional appeal)
How does the techniques to engage an audience help benefit the delivery of your speech?
Having an impactful opening can help to give common ground between you and the listener and make you sound more prepared or interesting.
Having a logical middle helps you feel confident in what you are saying and establish a flow, it can also help you convey the right emotions at the right time to make the most impact.

Having a clear beginning middle and end with a strong idea that links everything together. Establish a clear audience, situation and style. Only use note form as this is an aid. Leave time to rehearse.

Always introduce yourself and your purpose. Don’t read from your notes and engage the audience with eye contact.
What is a political speech?
Where you motivate the audience to take your side on a matter of public interest. The issue will most likely be controversial and emotive so you must use clear facts and base it on current research.

Entertains the audience while leading them on a journey to your point. It relies on skilled delivery and wit that matches your audience and is difficult to do well. It should be relatable.
What is an informative speech?
Educates the audience with interesting and useful information that is relevant to them and it must be supported by clear presentation. It must give: facts presented in a logical manner, no provocation or argument, no bias.
Describe some techniques that can be used to effectively engage an audience and how they benefit your speech?
Quotes -underlines the point you are going to make
Rhyme- can be used to draw attention to certain sounds or words
Emphasis- draws attention to the main points you want to make and helps it stick with the audience.
Startling statement- can establish common ground with audience and help keep their attention.
Story- can establish emotional connection with the audience.
Metaphor- helps to emphasise and compare your point adding emotion.
