Speciment Procurement Flashcards
A chemical or substance that prevents blood coagulation.
Anticoagulant
“The fossa”, or simply the depression in front of the elbow where blood is commonly drawn.
Antecubital Space
Puncture of the radial artery is the preferred method of obtaining an arterial blood sample for blood gas analysis.
Arterial Blood Gas (ABG) Puncture
A blood vessel that carries oxygenated blood from the heart to the tssues.
Arteries
Used for venipuncture on small veins, such as those in hand, and in elderly or pedistric patients.
Butterfly needle (winged collection/infusion set)
A minute blood vessel that connects the smallest arteries to the smallest veins and serves as an oxygen exchange vessel.
Capillaries
Refers to sampling blood from a puncture on the finger, heel or an earlobe.
Capillary Puncture
An anticoagulant used therapeutically to prevent thrombosis.
Heparin
Is located in the triangular area inside the elbow known ad the cubitsl fossa. It is a superficial vein, it lies close to the skin, making it a preferred site for drawing blood and intravenous access.
Median Basilic Vein (or median cubital)
The higher the gauge number, the smaller the diameter. Most common is 22 gauge, 1 inch long,
Needle gauge
A healthcare worker trained in blood collection.
Phlebotomist
Venipuncture; entry of a vein with a needle.
Phlebotomy
A hollow, tube-like container with a plunger, used for with drawing fluids or for injections.
Syringe
Occurs when blood clots veins or arteries. Numbness on one side of the body.
Thrombosis
A band used to construct blood flow.
Tourniquet
Used for transporting solid objects, as opposed to conventionsl pipelines, which transport fluids.
Vacuum Tube System
A blood vessel that carries deoxygenated blood from the tissues to the heart
Vein
Entry of a vein with a needle; a phlebotomy.
