Specific Latent Heat Flashcards
Why doesn’t the temp of the substance keep rising even when energy is being transferred through melting or boiling
You’re still putting in energy and increasing internal energy but the energy used for breaking intermolecular bonds rather than increasing the temperature
What happens to a substance’s internal energy store when it’s condensing or freezing
Bonds are forming between particles, which releases energy, this means internal energy decreases but the temp doesn’t go down until all the substance has turned to liquid or a solid
What is the energy needed to change the state of a substance called
Latent heat
What is specific latent heat
Amount of energy needed to change 1kg if it from to another without changing its temperature
What is the process called for changing between a solid and a liquid
Specific latent heat of fusion
What is the process called for changing between a liquid and a gas
Specific latent heat of vaporisation
What is the formula for specific latent heat
Energy= mass x specific latent heat
Mass in kg
SLH in j/kg
