Specific Heat Capacity Flashcards
1
Q
Definition of specific heat capacity:
A
The amount of energy needed to raide the temperature of 1kg of a substance by 1*C.
2
Q
Specific heat capacity equation:
A
Change in energy = m x c x temperature change.
3
Q
Specific heat capacity RP:
A
- Measure and record the mass of the block.
- Insert a thermometer and heater into the holes in the block. If the hole is wider than the thermometer, add a small amount of water to avoid the air around it acting as an insulator.
- Wrap the block in insulating material.
- Connect the ammeter, powerpack and heater in series.
- Measure and record the initial potential different and current or the block.
- Then take reading of the current every minute for 10 minutes.
- Calculate the temperature change.
- Calculate the power of the heater.
- Calculate the energy transferred to the heater.
- Calculate the specific heat capacity of the block.
