Specific Groups Flashcards
What is the name for group 1?
Alkali Metals
What happens the further down the Alkali Metals you go?
- They become more reactive
- Lower melting points
- Lower boiling points
What kind of density do alkali metals have?
Low density
Why are alkali metals all very reactive?
Because they have one electron in their outer shell so they are eager to lose it
How to alkali metals bond?
Ionically
What do alkali metals produce which can be dissolved in water? What happens when this IS dissolved in water?
- White compounds
- Form a colourless solution
What happens when lithium, sodium or potassium are put in water?
- They react vigorously (fizz)
- They produce hydrogen
- They form hydroxides that dissolve in water to give alkaline solutions
What is the name of group 7 elements?
Halogens
What happens as you go down the halogens?
- They get less reactive
- Higher melting points
- Higher boiling points
Which group has non-metals with coloured vapours?
Halogens
What element is a very reactive, poisonous, yellow gas?
Fluorine
What element is a fairly reactive, poisonous, dense green gas?
Chlorine
What element is a dense, poisonous, red brown, volatile liquid?
Bromine
What element is a dark grey, crystalline solid or a purple vapour?
Iodine
What ions do halogens form when they bond with metals and what are they called?
- Negative 1
- Halides
