Specific drug profiles Flashcards
1
Q
Clindamycin
A
- Covers for most gram positive bacteria
- Indicated in Staph. aureus infections
- Binds to 50s bacterial ribosomal subunit. Inhibition of elongation of new protein chain
- Side effects: CDI and diarrhoea
2
Q
Fucloxacillin
A
- Covers for methicillin sensitive Staph aureus but not MRSA and Beta haemolytic streptococci
- Targeted treatment of MSSA infections
- It is a beta lactam, inhibits bacterial wall synthesis enzymes
- Few side effects but allergies can be common
3
Q
Meropenem
A
- Ultra-broad spectrum - includes most Pseudomonas aeruginosa
- Doesn’t cover MRSA
- Indicated for severe infection requiring broad spectrum abx
- Very few side effects but allergy is to be considered
- Mode of action is inhibition of cell wall synthesis enzymes (beta-lactamase stable beta lactam)
4
Q
Glycopeptides - vancomycin and teicoplanin
A
- Covers most gram positive bacteria and NO gram negative bacteria
- Empiric treatment of infection likely to be caused by MRSA
- Empiric treatment of infections likely to be Staph Aureus
- Binds to D-alanyl-D-alanine on NAM pentapeptides, blocks peptidoglycan cross linking
- Side effect: renal impairment
- Pre dose monitoring to confirm therapeutic levels
