Specific defences Flashcards
What is an example of a specific defence?
Lymphocytes
What to lymphocytes do?
Once the right lymphocyte has been located, it binds to the antigens on the surface of the pathogen.
What is the first stage of the lymphocytes job?
It’s cell divides by mitosis
What happens after the lymphocyte divides by mitosis?
The lymphocytes then secrete antibodies
What happens after the lymphocytes secrete antibodies?
The antibodies of the lymphocyte bind to the antigens on the pathogen and kill the pathogen.
What will happen to some of the antibodies that the lymphocytes secrete?
Some antibodies will remain in the body as memory cells.
Why do some of the antibodies remain in the memory cells?
Some of the antibodies remain in the memory cells so the next time the same antigen is encountered they produce antibodies more rapidly and to a greater extent.
