Speciation Flashcards
How are new species formed?
Due to isolating mechanism preventing successful interbreeding
Allopatric - occurs due to geographical isolation
Sympatric - reproductively isolated
Describe allopatric speciation
Become less like each other as they respond to different selection pressure
Mutations accumulate independently and allele frequency changes
When population is small there will be random changes in allele frequency called genetic drift
Describe sympatric speciation
Ecological - species occupy different habitats
Temporal - same area by reproduce at different time
Behavioural - same area don’t respond to each others courtship behaviour
Physical incompatibility - co-exist but physicality pprevents interbreeding
Hybrid inviability - hybrids don’t survive long enough
Hybrid sterility- hybrids survive but cannot reproduce
