Speciation Flashcards
Allopatric Speciation
Occurs when a species separates into two separate groups that are isolated from one another.
Sympatric Speciation
The evolution of a new species from a surviving ancestral species while both continue to inhabit the same geographic region.
Convergent Evolution
Two different species develop similar traits despite having different ancestors.
Divergent Evolution
Groups with the same common ancestor evolve and accumulate differences resulting in the formation of new species.
Coevolution
Evolutionary changes that occur between pairs of species that interact.
Binomial Nonenclature
The system of naming consists of two words for each organism.
Speciation-Prezygotic Barriers
Prevents mating or hinders fertilization
Bottleneck Effect
When a large population is drastically reduced by a non-selective disaster
Founder’s Effect
Small portions of individuals stuck from the rest of the population and established a small gene pool that differed from a large population.
